This is a complicated question, and many people have different opinions on this. Generally speaking, more experienced players tend to use heavier BBs. They better maintain energy at a distance and have tigher shot groupings, particularly when there is wind. Newer players tend to use lighter BBs, as they provide better bang for your buck. You also need to make sure your Hop Up can lift the weight that you buy. Most stock Hop Ups these days can lift 0.32g BBs or lighter out-of-the-box.
For a standard "rifleman" setup shooting ~1.5J or ~400FPS with 0.20g BBs, most experienced players use 0.32g BBs. They are relatively heavy and won't break the bank. Raymond and Zoogie, the owners of Sure Shot, prefer to use 0.36g BBs. We believe these have the best performance at ~1.5J, but they are significantly more expensive than 0.32g BBs. Luckily, Sure Shot has great prices!!
For a standard DMR setup shooting ~1.88J or ~450FPS with 0.20g BBs, most experienced players use 0.32g BBs or higher. Raymond and Zoogie use 0.40g BBs for their DMRs.
For a standard sniper setup shooting above 1.88J / 450FPS with 0.20g BBs, we recommend 0.45g BBs.
The first thing to do is make sure they are made in Taiwan, which should be indicated on the packaging. All Sure Shot BBs are made in Taiwan. In our experience, BBs made in China have quality control issues that can lead to jams, barrel scratches, gearbox issues, and poor range & accuracy.
The second thing is to visually inspect the BB. Make sure they are perfectly polished and have no visible seam. Many very low quality BBs have visible seams around them, which can lead to broken guns and poor performance.
A vast majority of the fields we play at require biodegradable BBs. The airsoft market as a whole is moving towards bio BBs in order to reduce the impact on the fields we play at.
The Hop Up is a device that applies backspin to your BBs as they shoot out of your gun. This allows them to travel farther before dropping and increases your effective range. You can adjust the amount of backspin or "hop" applied. How much hop you need depends on personal preference, BB weight, field conditions, and the battle situation you're in.
It is important to buy the right weight BBs for your Hop Up. Most stock Hop Ups can lift 0.32g BBs. If you want to use heavier BBs, you will likely need to replace the stock bucking with an aftermarket one.
